Britain’s First Furniture Orchard Grows Chairs Right on the Trees

A British couple has spent 20 years perfecting the practice of sculpting trees to grow into the shapes of ready-made seats designed with living branches. Alice and Gavin Munro began creating the ‘furniture orchard’ on a two-acre English farm in 2006, but the harvesting typically takes between 6-9 years per chair. The process involves pruning young tree branches as they grow over a special metal frame to form the shape. Each item is dried for a year after being chopped, and are then sold to customers as artworks valued at tens of thousands of dollars.

I've seen reference to several such farms. It's a cool concept.

You were all right about peonies; the first buds opened today and I am a convert. What a bloom. The irises are still going strong, and it's almost rose season, so there's color everywhere. Including in the magenta daisies that came back much stronger than expected; I don't remember them being so vibrant last fall.

I'm trying again with a yucca plant. I didn't buy it, specifically because I've already killed one, but it was set out by the curb for the taking and I had a stroller, so. It's out on the back porch now, where I will ignore it as much as possible.

I also created a tiny succulent annex in one of my gardens. I find it adorable, although I lack the experience to know how sustainable it is. I'm pretty sure my indoor succulent planter from the make 'n take was dehydrated tonight when I gently injected 100 mL of water into it - it was dark at the time (obviously the best time to water) but it looked sad. I've been writing down when I water it, but apparently remembering the next watering should be part of the process.

I've planted almost everything I had outstanding from last weekend's plant sale, plus a fern my parents gave me for my birthday and some dianthus a neighbor had put in her garden and then didn't like the color of. And some lambs ear that had escaped containment and has been in danger of getting mowed for weeks; I relocated it deeper in the same garden. The extended no-mow weeks of May (which we do not officially observe, though not for lack of trying, or not trying as the case may be) also allowed me to locate some buttercups in the lawn that have been transferred to the big shade garden, looking remarkably cheerful with the pink cranesbill.

Indoors we excavated and installed seasonal climate control on all levels; the air conditioners and dehumidifier have all been run to test and are now idle, awaiting a summer that seems to be starting a little late this year. No complaints here. We also picked up our community-sponsored rain barrel this morning, which is sitting next to the garage while I figure out what else we need to set it up. If we're very ambitious, that will be tomorrow's project.

So I am being a sap. As today is the 20th anniversary of my now wife and I exchanging contact information and starting on the road that led to here.

Do you have an oh moment you would be comfortable sharing?

Mine was almost definitely in the month after I moved here, and a perfectly normal conversation where I was watching this bright, lovely woman who had offered me freedom... and I knew I could not see a future without her. Just... had to grow into what it wished to be from there.

I had entertained fantasies of attending Pride, especially since I can really get behind the theme of protesting since 1776, but what I actually had the energy for was imitating a pancake. Eventually I gathered enough verticality to walk around the neighborhood and make hot dogs for dinner. TCM gladdened my heart by running The Sea Wolf (1941). I have not enjoyed the news about either Marjane Satrapi or Anthony Stewart Head. In lieu of a parade, I wore the rainbow cat T-shirt my godson handed up to me.

Yesterday after I logged off work, I made a ricotta cheesecake, and since I know my springform pans are leaky (they are old and need to be replaced), I just used a deep dish pie plate, and it was fine. I also added about 2/3 cup of mini chocolate chips that the recipe did not call for, but which seemed necessary, though it is also a delicious cake without them (the cinnamon/orange/vanilla flavor is actually super Christmassy to me? but the heart wants what it wants, even if it's June rather than December). Also the vanilla bean paste gives it those little speckles which means it's even more delicious than usual! *g* Anyway, if you need a cheesecake but don't have a springform pan or a stand mixer, and don't want to deal with a water bath, this is the way to go.

Then today, I tried to make baked mozzarella sticks instead of fried - mainly because cleaning up after frying is a lot and also the smell lingers - but I didn't realize you are supposed to freeze them for TWO HOURS so I got a late start and didn't eat until almost 6:30. They were okay but not as wonderfully crisp as they get when fried, even though I used panko. Also, despite what some of these recipes say, you really should season every layer - the flour, the egg, and the breadcrumbs. I am just saying.

My plan for tomorrow is to make bacon so there's that for lunch for the week, along with some chicken pesto meatballs - we'll see how they are. I am apparently on a ground chicken kick, because I have a bunch of recipes I want to try, and as long as it keeps being on sale, I'm good to go!

In other news, the Knicks are up 2-0 on the Spurs and only TWO GAMES away from winning a chip! They've won 13 in a row in these playoffs! What even is happening??? MSG is going to be nuts on Monday. But remember, you absolutely do not have to hand it to James Dolan. #go new york go new york go

So, I missed the last couple of days because on Thursday I went out, and on Friday I was just scattered, unfocused, and kind of recovering from going out.

Thursday went well! I saw my friend and we hung out for a few hours. Sadly the right there was two hours long and it was the same coming back, but when we were actually where we were going, I had a lovely time. We got great food (and I got to bring back baklava) and she got be a very nice bar soap that I'm going to take with me when I go traveling.

Friday I started taking inventory of everything I'm going to try and bring with me on my trip. I'm going to be gone until sometime in August, so I'm trying to make sure I bring enough stuff, but also don't overpack. To my credit, I normally start the obsessive packing process at least two weeks in advance, so the fact that I'm only just starting this now is actually really good for me!

I haven't done anymore fiction writing, but I did start doing little handwritten TDLs/notes to myself in my current notebook. It really does feel nice to sometimes handwrite something, even if my penmanship is awful. I feel like I should maybe work on that some, but I have no idea where to start on that.

My mother went to the beach with my aunt, so I've had the house to myself. Technically my cousin also lives here, but he's almost always either at his girlfriend's house, or (right now) with his kids who are staying at my aunt's place for the summer. So yeah, house to myself for a longer period of time is a m a z i n g.

I need to fix something to eat, which I'm not sure what that will be yet, but there's a huge part of me that wants to do the very adult thing and just have ice cream instead. I won't, but it's still tempting.

Our Favorite Queer Audiobooks for Audiobook Appreciation Month

June is Audiobook Appreciation Month! While we talk a lot on our blogs about all the books we read, we haven’t talked much about how often we don’t “read” those books so much as listen to them! A lot of our rec list reccers love audiobooks and rely on them for various reasons. Thus, we wanted to celebrate by highlighting some of the great books that have audiobook versions we loved.

Masters of the Universe (2026) no-spoiler reaction (TLDR: It's fun!)

I saw Masters of the Universe (2006) at the theater light night. I had a lot of fun! I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I did not expect what they made, which is a joyous campy subtly-clever romp that got me smiling soon, and smiling more and more the longer it continued. Children and adults who never knew this IP can have a fun time fully as much as those of us '80s children who somehow still know, say, Queen Marlena's origin, or who Teela's mother is, or the name of every action figure in our brothers' and cousins' and neighbors' toyboxes.

Never has watching a movie felt so much like playing with action figures
.

I have seen the trailer, and very much look forward to watching this movie.

EDIT 6/6/26 -- I spread the bag of Black Kow composted manure over the telephone pole garden, then tacked down the net that discourages critters from digging in it. I still need to spread topsoil over that and sow the seeds, but that's for tomorrow.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night. *goflopnow*

Absence

I had to go to London on Thursday and it was so horrible that I've had a migraine ever since lol

I really thought that "calling" in sick yesterday afternoon and going right to bed where I fell asleep for another five hours, and then sleeping another seven or eight at night like usual, had dealt with the worst of it. But no, I've been very up-and-down today too: I went to transgym, but couldn't stay awake after. I walked the neighbors' dog, with D, but have been flopping around on the couch ever since. I took dinner out of the freezer and put it in the oven but then the stabby headache came back.

I can't read/listen/concentrate (I've sort of read my reading page here, but not properly). It's very boring.
