I switched my morning around and left home an hour later than usual. In that hour I put a chuck roast in the crock pot and did some online fandom things. I went with the Cinnamon Orange tea again this morning. Downtown I hit Price Chopper, then went to my chiropractic appointment.

THEN I went to McD’s and got some writing done; ~700 words, which is less than the last couple days, but it’s not nothing, so \o/

I picked the dogs up on my way home (my winter schedule for picking up the dogs has been different than usual because I tend to not want to go back out and get them if it’s cold or snowy), where I put groceries away and walked them (I had on so many layers!).

I prepared lunch for all of us (including Midnight who was howling for more food – he’ll sometimes eat very little on a day, then be starving the next day, and apparently blaming me for it), though I planned to take mine with me.

I hit the post office and filled my gas tank on the way to visit mom (where I ate my lunch). When I got home I took the dogs for another walk (and fed Midnight yet again; apparently today was a day when he wanted all the food *g*).

I also did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes (why does it seem like dirty dishes just sort of keep appearing?), checked on Midnight’s dry food and water dishes (this is where I normally say ‘scooped kitty litter’, but there was nothing to scoop, probably because yesterday was a day he didn’t eat much), and paid a bill online. When Pip got home we went for another walk.

One nice thing was I received a set of tea bag coasters that I’d ordered. With sunflowers on them!! (I tried to link to them, but apparently they are sold out so it won’t even link to the item so I can show you.)

ETA: Forgot to mention that I watched one of my fave HGTV programs, Fixer to Fabulous!

Temps started out at 9.0(F) and dropped exactly 2 degrees to 7.0 before I left the house. The high I saw was 25.5. We had a tiny bit of snow late afternoon, big fat flakes, but not enough to accumulate, thankfully.

The bad news is that I’ve been concentrating on the low temperatures we’ll be having (overnight lows in the negatives and highs in single digits) and Pip informed me that we’re in for a big snow storm Sunday. 3-5" during the day, 3-5" overnight, and an additional 1-3" Monday. DNW!!!

Mom Update:

Mom was doing okay when I saw her. She was tired. And cold. She used a heavy blanket when she’s in her recliner, but I suggested she turn her heat up. (She has it set at 70, but her living room felt cool even to me, and I generally overheat.) She ate lunch while I was there. I got her mail and wrote out a check that I put back in the mailbox, stripped her bed, and brought home her laundry. I also opened one of her protein drinks, because I’m handy that way. *g*

She’s looking forward to company tonight, a woman she knows from the village who just recently found out that mom was sick. She called her yesterday to ask if she could come visit. So that’ll be nice for her.

ETA: I later learned that Sister A and Ian also visited her.

Challenge #11
In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

I had already done this once here, and today I went through a few links and also did it in a few others (x, x, x, x, x). These are all recommendations, things I could fulfill quickly, ranging from music to books to TV shows, one recipe... Maybe there's something in one of them you'll enjoy :D

In my own wish list I asked for collaboration with a new community I created, dcfemslashevents, where I promote and organise events focused on femslash of the DC fandom. And I got that, with several people asking to be members! Now, as an extension of that, I would love if people could participate, or at least spread the word, of the first event: a comment fest where we'll encourage people to leave comments on DC f/f creations of all kinds during Femslash February.

Image of a sky during sunset, in orange tones. It includes the text "dcu femslash february comment fest."

In that list I also talked about femslash ships I would like to see more fanfic of, and I ended up requesting some of them for seasonsofdrabbles (and for the three sentence ficathon), where I specifically asked for stuff from the DCU (with some focus on Wonder Woman/Amazons), Pluribus, Foundation, Black Sails, The 100, Yellowface by R.F. Kuang, The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente, and Stranger Things. It's a really fun event, and I'd recommend to check up the sign-up and requests summaries to see if there's any fandom/prompt you might want to write a treat for. Mine can be seen here on tumblr :D

The rain let up yesterday so I went into town to do some thrifting! I spotted some interesting knick-knaocks, like a tiny Limoges decorative bowl and some bone china stuff but nothing that wowed me (or that I wanted to haul around until I get back to the US, for that matter). I DID find a decent book selection, though! I got 5 books for £17/$22 USD, which I think is pretty good.

A stack of 5 books on a kitchen table

Titles:
1. Viva South America by Oliver Balch
2. Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving (comes with a soundtrack CD!)
3. Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
4. I Planted Trees by Richard St. Barber Baker
5. Peregrinations of a Pariah by Flora Tristan, translated by Jean Hawkes

I'm pretty sure I have at least one of these books as an ebook already, but whatever. Now I need to track down a CD player...

There's someone who is trying to raise funds for memorial services and to bury his brother who died of exposure last weekend.   I'll just say what I said on bluesky:

His family wants to do memorial services in Minneapolis and in Wisconsin where he was born and will be buried.

If you've felt grief, if you've comforted people in grief, please help these folks.

(My own mother died this morning.
If you were gonna bring me a hot dish,
please give here instead.)

How is everyone doing this chilly Thursday. Snowpocalypse is slowly creeping nearer. We might get a smattering of ice to go with our snow now, but they're still putting us over 10 inches.

Our apartments are annoying. They sent us a message yesterday that we're going to have an inspection for pests...today. I love when they give us 24 hours notice. We spent last night cleaning and goddamn I am sore today. I vacuumed, swept and cleaned, and between that and all the work Jess did, the house looks fairly presentable. I had kind of fallen down on the job while we were all sick, so it needed extra attention. The worst thing about the sudden inspection is that Jess had their transcription certification test tomorrow and the notice camse after the cut off to cancel. I have to work, so they have to be here to tuck Yoda in the bathroom so they can inspect. So that's money that we're out. I don't really care about the money, but I know it bothers Jess.

I think we have enough food laid in for the weekend, though I would like to get some milk and heavy cream, maybe eggs if anywhere has them. You never know if the baking bug is going to get me while we're snowed in.

Our order from Legal Seafood for a two pack of soups arrived last night, so I may save them for Saturday or Sunday dinner. We definitely won't be able to order with so much snow on the ground.

They still can't tell us how much we're getting with any strong certainty. Weather.com is telling me a minimum of 14" and a max of 23". But all the local meteorologists are still holding the totals until at least Friday, maybe Saturday. Even then, we'll know how much we get when we wake up Monday morning and whether it'll be just snow, or snow and ice (yay.)

I'm both nervous and looking forward to the snow. We haven't had a big snow in a while, and it will be pretty. On the other, it means digging out and the threat of losing power when the temps are 15 degrees F. We'll see how it goes.

I don't think I'll need them for Alaska, but I'm glad I got everyone heavy coats for Christmas. We may all need them. I've been wearing mine pretty much all the time when we take Yoda out. It's just be motherfucking frigid. Today, it's getting up to 50, so I'll probably downgrade to a fleece for at least the lunchtime walk. Tonight it's back to 29, so heavy coat it is.

Jess and I are supposed to have date night tomorrow or Saturday. I'm leaning towards Friday, but we'll see. It's Baltimore County Restaurant week, so it's a three course price fixe meal. I don't really need 3 courses, but that's okay. I can manage.

I also really want to try out the new Asian buffet that opened recently. It looks very nice, and hopefully the food is also good. I've been putting off going out because of the cough, but it's mostly doing better. I still cough in the morning, but not nearly as much through the day and evening. I can almost imagine it going completely away eventually.

We were again crazy yesterday, but I spent most of my day filling in slots and calling everyone back. People were so fucking picky about their appointments. I do not understand this thing where you have a STAT order for something serious or potentially serious and then refuse to take the open slot right away, instead telling me that you need this particular time and date. We work hard to get these slots, sometimes having me tetris multiple patients to do it. It can be frustrating. It's like "are you at all worried about the potential clot in your leg, or the lump in your breast?" The answer usually seems to be "not particularly."

I'm still waiting for anything regarding my "rather soon" pay bump. Every time I get a random message, I'm kind of jumping to grab it. Hopefully it'll happen in the very near future.

Okay, time for me to go forth. Everyone have an outstanding Thursday!

Which One First: Alice Coldbreath

Posted by SB Sarah

A stack of books with an ereader on top with the words Classic Romance Which One First written on the screenBack by popular demand, it’s Which One First,  where we recommend where new readers should start with an author’s considerable backlist.

And also by request: it’s Which One First? Alice Coldbreath Edition!

Alice Coldbreath, if you aren’t familiar, is a massively popular author of historical romances, specifically medievals and some Victorian stories.

I love the entire existence of Coldbreath’s career. In a time where historical romance is not as dominant as it once was, and the more popular genres in romance are contemporary and Rrrrrrrrrromantasy, Alice Coldbreath is killing it writing medievals. Medievals! A subgenre of romance I hadn’t thought of until Coldbreath started dominating Reddit threads. I love this. I love it so much. It’s so great!

I also love her “about” page on her website: a portrait of (I presume) Alice herself with a very handsome dog, done in a medieval style.

And, after a three sentence bio, the page reads:

Alice Coldbreath’s books promise you…

    • A guaranteed Happily Ever After for the hero and heroine.
    • Categorically NO cheating by the central characters within their pages.
    • To be stand-alone romances that will never end on a cliff-hanger or require the purchase of another book to complete the central story.

Reader warning, Alice Coldbreath’s books also contain:

    • Jealous heroes
    • Strong language.
    • Scenes of a sexual nature.

I kinda like this forthright authorial guarantee. It’s very satisfying!

Lara has reviewed Wed by Proxy and gave it an A, in part because she loved how the book gave her the flavor of “tempestuous novels with slammed doors and groveling and intense feelings” (a la Jilly Cooper) but didn’t “make me cringe or rage because of dubious consent, controlling behaviour, and the like.” Lara also loved An Inconvenient Vow, and gave it an A-.

Love Potion for the Alpha
A | BN | K | AB
But where do you think a new reader should start with Coldbreath’s novels?

She has, if I understand correctly, three main groups of novels:

  • medievals set in the fictional kingdom of Karadok
  • Victorian novels set in the actual-factual Victorian era in England
  • And! A paranormal – it’s a medieval with shifters called Love Potion for the Alpha

Folks who love Coldbreath’s novels like that she writes slow burn love stories that frequently start with arranged marriages, but also feature heroes who become completely besotted with their partners. There also seem to be a lot of Deeply Shitty Parents.

With several series, it makes sense, as Lara advised when we discussed this internally, to start “at the beginning of whatever series you’re interested in. I should have started with the Vaudrey brothers series.”

Amanda says, “My first and only Coldbreath was Her Baseborn Bridegroom and I found it underwhelming, probably because I set my expectations too high. I have friends who squee about her books a lot. I think it’s a fine entry, but I don’t know if it’s the best entry, if that makes sense.”

Claudia agrees: “I started with that one too, Amanda — then never picked up more of her books.”

I personally don’t start at the beginning of a series if I don’t want to. (I realize this is truly unfathomable behavior to many of you!) I’ll start with book 6 if that’s the one I want to read.

His Forsaken Bride
A | BN | K | AB
Kiki agrees: “For the medieval inspired books, I actually think you should skip Her Baseborn Bridegroom and read His Forsaken Bride first—it’s the set up for the rest of the Karadok series and gives a better vision of the whole court, although I know some folks don’t love the hero.

“For the Victorian series, I LOVED A Substitute Wife for the Prizefighter (again, the second book in the series).”

So please help your fellow readers, Alice Coldbreath fans!  Between the Brides of Karadok series and the Victorian Prizefighter and Victorian Reversal of Fortune series, which books do you recommend a new reader start with?

And if possible, please try to explain why you’re recommending that book as a starting place. Y’all make wonderful recommendations.

Hi, c'mon in and join us! :3 I hope you've brought a flashlight/torch with fresh batteries, or perhaps a sturdy padlock, and yes, you might even need a shovel, because...

Today's theme is secrets and mysteries. All prompts and fills must involve answers (are the characters searching for them? do they find them by accident?) and questions (is someone full of them? avoiding them?). Will what's hidden be revealed, or will it be safely secured and potentially forgotten?

Feel free to add specifics to your prompts, like whether you'd prefer a gen fill over something shippy, or if you have a squick or trigger you hope to avoid. Original fiction, fanfiction, and fanfic crossovers are always welcome. ~_^

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get things started...
+ Leverage(/Redemption) or The Librarian(s), any +/ any, so that's what that [thing] does
+ any fandom besides spy and crime fandoms, any +/ any, using invisible ink or (deciphering) a coded message
+ author's choice, any (+/ any), a secret entrance

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection. See further notes on this option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community. Fret not, DW members; we are working on a way to search through old entries for prompts for you! As of right now, the best way to search for a lonely prompt on DW is to search the community’s archive, which can be found [[HERE]].

While the use of LJ's advanced search and DW’s archive are options, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

As a friendly reminder about our schedule, Lonely Prompts and sharing completed fills are encouraged on Sundays, while new themes and prompts are posted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day. We'll share our posts on DW and LJ for everyone's convenience. Keep an eye out for notifications!

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

Occasional Poem by Jacqueline Woodson

Jan. 27th, 2026 01:03 am
conuly: (Default)
[personal profile] conuly
Ms. Marcus says that an occasional poem is a poem
written about something
important
or special
that's gonna happen
or already did.
Think of a specific occasion, she says—and write about it.

Like what?! Lamont asks.
He's all slouched down in his seat.
I don't feel like writing about no occasion.

How about your birthday?
Ms. Marcus says.
What about it? Just a birthday. Comes in June and it ain't
June, Lamont says. As a matter of fact,

he says, it's January and it's snowing.
Then his voice gets real low and he says
And when it's January and all cold like this
feels like June's a long, long ways away.

The whole class looks at Ms. Marcus.
Some of the kids are nodding.
Outside the sky looks like it's made out of metal
and the cold, cold air is rattling the windowpanes
and coming underneath them too.

I seen Lamont's coat.
It's gray and the sleeves are too short.
It's down but it looks like a lot of the feathers fell out
a long time ago.
Ms. Marcus got a nice coat.
It's down too but real puffy so
maybe when she's inside it
she can't even tell January from June.

Then write about January, Ms. Marcus says, that's
an occasion.

But she looks a little bit sad when she says it
Like she's sorry she ever brought the whole
occasional poem thing up.

I was gonna write about Mama's funeral
but Lamont and Ms. Marcus going back and forth
zapped all the ideas from my head.

I guess them arguing
on a Tuesday in January's an occasion
So I guess this is an occasional poem.

In the midst of everything, we still have birthdays, and for [personal profile] spatch's fifty-first I took him to Porter Square Books and on the roundabout way home we collected dinner from Il Casale. It started to snow on the way back, the light salting flakes of an all-day deep-freeze. I have my fingers crossed for an Arctic explosion this weekend.

I have written another fill (AO3) for [community profile] threesentenceficathon. WERS played Dave Herlihy's "Good Trouble" (2025) and I had to get home to trace his voice to Boston's own post-punk O Positive. I wish I could call the hundred-year tides against the people who have no right to the streets of my grandparents' city. Failing that, it still matters to be alive.
